Private investigators must comply with the law. They cannot make arrests, wiretap phones without consent, trespass on private property, hack into computers, or impersonate law enforcement. Their role is to gather information legally and present facts to clients.

The cost of an investigation depends on the scope of work, time required, and case complexity. Services are generally billed by the hour, and clients are also responsible for expenses such as mileage or records fees. Certain services, such as background checks or asset searches, may be available at a flat fee. During the initial consultation, we provide a written agreement that specifies the hourly rate, required retainer, and all anticipated costs.

Yes. Hiring a licensed private investigator is legal in California and throughout the United States. In California, investigators are regulated by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). Clients should confirm a PI’s license status before engaging services. In California, retaliation happens when an employer punishes an employee for speaking up about something the law protects. This could include reporting discrimination or harassment, filing a complaint with HR or a government agency, requesting medical or family leave, asking for a disability accommodation, or raising concerns about safety or illegal practices.

Retaliation does not have to mean getting fired. It can also look like a demotion, loss of hours, unfair discipline, denial of promotions, or creating a hostile environment that discourages the employee from exercising their rights.

California law is clear: employees should be able to raise concerns without fear of punishment. If an employee can show that they engaged in a protected activity, experienced a negative action, and that the two are connected, it may qualify as unlawful retaliation.

Examples of Retaliation:

  • Termination or demotion.
  • Reduction of hours or pay.
  • Negative performance evaluations used as pretext.
  • Exclusion from meetings, training, or promotions.
  • Hostile treatment or threats that would deter a reasonable employee from asserting their rights.
