Background Investigations

A background investigation answers a specific question about a specific person or company. It is not a database printout. Records are gathered for a defined lawful purpose, verified against the right identity, and interpreted in context, with the limits of each source stated plainly.

Allen Morris Investigations conducts background research for attorneys, insurers, businesses, fiduciaries, and private clients throughout California and Arizona, under California Private Investigator License No. 27033.

What a Background Investigation Covers

Scope is built around the decision you are trying to make, not sold as a fixed package.

  • Civil and criminal court records, and full litigation history
  • Professional licensing status and disciplinary records
  • Business filings, corporate affiliations, and officer records
  • Property, lien, and judgment records
  • Media, publication, and reputational research
  • Identity verification, employment history, and credential confirmation
  • Relationship and affiliation mapping between individuals and entities

A record that does not appear is not the same as a record that does not exist. The report says which situation applies, so you are never left guessing what a blank result means.

What This Service Does Not Cover

Background reports used to decide whether to hire, promote, reassign, or retain someone are consumer reports under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act and California’s Investigative Consumer Reporting Agencies Act. Those statutes carry their own disclosure, authorization, accuracy, and adverse action obligations.

This firm does not provide employment screening reports, and will refer you to a consumer reporting agency built to comply with those rules. A workplace investigation into suspected misconduct is a different matter entirely and is handled through the workplace investigations practice.

Who Retains Us

  • Attorneys assessing an opposing party, a witness, or a prospective client
  • Insurance carriers and claims professionals evaluating a claimant or a claim history
  • Businesses and boards vetting a partner, vendor, investor, or acquisition target
  • Trustees and executors confirming the identity and standing of a beneficiary
  • Private individuals with a documented, lawful reason to verify someone’s background

How It Works

  1. Consultation and conflict check. A short conversation covering what you need to know and why, at no charge.
  2. Written scope and estimate. The question to be answered, the research to be performed, the timeline, and the cost.
  3. Research. Primary sources wherever they are available, with identity confirmed before anything is reported.
  4. Written report. Delivered on the agreed schedule, with labeled exhibits.

What You Receive

A written report stating the question presented, the sources examined, what was found, what could not be found and why, and how much confidence each finding supports. Exhibits are labeled, dated, and referenced in the text.

Reports are written to be handed directly to counsel, a carrier, a court, or a board without being rewritten first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from an online background check?

An online service returns whatever sits in a database, including stale records, mismatched identities, and entries belonging to someone else with a similar name. A background investigation verifies identity first, works from primary sources, and explains what the findings actually mean.

Do I need an attorney to retain you?

No. What is required is a lawful purpose for the research, not a lawyer.

How long does it take?

A focused records search often resolves within several business days. Multi party research and out of state records take longer. A timeline is provided in writing before the work begins.

Is my inquiry confidential?

Yes. Consultations are confidential and the existence of an engagement is not disclosed to third parties.
